Honorarium suggested for student volunteers of Tamil conference

COIMBATORE: A proposal has been made to the State Government to offer an honorarium for the student volunteers taking part in the World Classical Tamil Conference scheduled to be held here from June 23 to 27.

They will also be issued a participation certificate, District Collector P. Umanath said here on Thursday.

Inaugurating an introductory/orientation programme for student and teacher volunteers of Bharathiar University and its affiliated colleges, the Collector said the three-pronged work related to the conference involved infrastructure and developmental activities, conference-related networking, and care of visitors with regard to stay, food, and travel.

Officer on Special Duty for the Tamil Conference S. Prabhakaran laid out the structure and functions of the various committees – reception, accommodation, guest care, food, conference, healthcare and procession. In addition, a media assistance committee was announced. Students from the visual and mass communication disciplines would be part of the committee and they would assist the media / press personnel covering the five-day conference.

Accordingly, the first training programme for the guest care committee would be held on May 17. Secretary to Government (Public) D. Jothi Jagarajan would address the volunteers. City Police Commissioner C. Sylendra Babu addressed a gathering of nearly 150 NSS Programme Officers in the afternoon session.

He laid out the functions of the 5,000 NSS volunteers who would be involved in the conference work.

Vice-Chancellor C. Swaminathan, Registrar P. Thirumalvalavan, co-ordinator R. Venkatapathy, and NSS Programme Co-ordinator (in-charge) K. Govindarajulu, also spoke.
