CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation will launch the Tamil version of its website on June 17, Mayor M. Subramanian said on Saturday.

Speaking at a function to launch ‘Vayil Thorum Valluvam,’ an initiative to place boards with Tirukkural couplets and their short meanings at 2,500 buildings and parks belonging to the civic body, he said all civic body buildings other than burial grounds and public conveniences would have such boards.

The meanings have been drawn from commentaries written by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. The boards made of acrylic plates each cost Rs.2,500.

The total cost of installing the boards would be Rs.62.5 lakh.

As part of the World Classical Tamil Conference, commercial establishments had been directed to install name boards with prominent Tamil lettering. Over 70 per cent of the shops have changed their boards, he added.

Leader of Opposition in the Corporation Council Saidai P. Ravi said that official communications of the civic body would soon be in Tamil.

Ruling party leader N. Ramalingam said that to encourage people to name their children in Tamil, the Corporation launched a scheme to present one gram gold rings to babies born in civic body hospitals and named in Tamil.

Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni and Deputy Mayor R. Sathyabhama were present.
