Renowned scholar yet to get invitation for Tamil meet

Tirupur: N. Subrahmanian (95), a scholar and winner of literary award from the State Government in 1972, will be sitting in the serene environment of his son’s house at Udumalpet, when the World Classical Tamil Conference begins at the nearby Coimbatore city on June 23.

The man who wrote renowned works – ‘Sangam polity’ and ‘History of India’- which fetched him the literary award from the Tamil Nadu Government, however, has no regrets that he is yet to get the invitation for the conference. Interestingly, Mr. Subrahmanian had received the award from M. Karunanidhi, who was the Chief Minister.

Unperturbed, he is busy with his next literary projects defying the age factor.

Mr. Subrahmanian, who served as a lecturer in Jain College, Madras, and Madras University, and then as professor and head of history department in Madurai varsity, had also worked in the Tamil Encyclopaedia Department attached to Madras University in the 1950s.

“I took up the job in the Encyclopaedia Department after resigning from the Revenue Department,” he said.

Impressed with his scholarly skills, it was none other than the then Education Minister Avinashilingam Chettiar who offered him the post of sub-editor in the Encyclopaedia Department.

Mr. Subrahmanian, who obtained his doctorate from Annamalai University, had also completed a four-year ‘title course’ of ‘Tamil Vidwan’ from Madras University.

An author of 152 books published in Tamil and English, this retired emeritus professor of North-Eastern Hill University, a Central University at Shillong in Meghalaya, is now translating Victor Hugo’s novel ‘Les Miserables’ and some of the Shakespearean works into Tamil.
