Arrangements in place for World Tamil conference

Coimbatore: Police machinery is geared up fully for handling the crowd control, traffic management and law and order maintenance during the forthcoming World Classical Tamil Conference from June 23 to 27, said Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore City C. Sylendra Babu on Wednesday.

Talking to reporters, Mr.Sylendra Babu said that 10,000 police personnel would be on deployment under the supervision of 87 Deputy Superintendents of Police, 30 Additional Superintendents of Police, 33 Superintendents of Police and six Deputy Inspectors-General of Police.

Besides this, 35 ambulances and 20 recovery vehicles will be mobilised for handling contingencies and for removal of vehicles that may break down. This will be done to avoid traffic snarls.

In the event of any grievances or inconveniences, the public could call up the control room at 100 or 98431 00101 which would be functioning round-the-clock under the supervision of DIG of Police, Vellore Range, P. Thamaraikannan.

Mr.Sylendra Babu said that normal life and traffic flow would be ensured on all the days.

Avanashi Road will be blocked from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on June 23 when the procession of floats winds its way from VOC Park Grounds to CODISSIA Fair Complex.

Otherwise, Avanashi Road will be open for normal traffic and shops and establishments will remain open.

When the procession winds its way, there would be a temporary diversion of traffic on Tiruchi Road.

On June 23 alone, passengers to and from Peelamedu Airport would be advised and guided to travel through SIHS Colony and Tiruchi Road avoiding Avanashi Road.

For effective traffic management, police personnel in the rank of Sub-Inspectors on 100 two-wheelers would be deployed at almost all vantage locations in the city to regulate the flow of traffic.

Those visiting the conference venue could come till Coimbatore Medical College grounds and park their vehicles and walk 500 metres to reach the conference pandal.

Smooth traffic flow would be ensured on all arterial roads such as Sathyamangalam Road, Mettupalayam Road, Thadagam Road, Perur Road, Marudhamalai Road, Palakkad Road, Pollachi Road and also on Avanashi Road except for the inaugural day.


A meeting of the police officials and Coimbatore Lorry Owners Association was held recently to decide on the measures to be initiated to manage the traffic flow during June 23 to 27 when the city hosts the World Classical Tamil Conference.

The meeting was attended by Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore City, C. Sylendra Babu, Deputy Commissioners of Police S. Nizamuddin (Coimbatore – DCP Traffic), G. Karthikeyan (St.Thomas Mount – DC Traffic) and representatives of the lorry owners association.

The meeting decided to ply heavy vehicles avoiding Avanashi Road and using Tiruchi Road.


With regard to buses, it was decided to operate from Singanallur and Ukkadam.

During the float procession, heavy vehicles will not be allowed on Avanashi Road and will be blocked for vehicular traffic and arrangements would be made for transportation of essential commodities.

The meeting decided to operate heavy vehicles during night hours.

For free flow of traffic on Oppanakkara Street parking of vehicles will not be allowed temporarily during the conference days.

It was decided to give wide publicity through newspapers and media on the traffic diversion.

Container trucks and heavy trucks will not be allowed on Avanashi Road during the conference days as they would cause heavy traffic congestion in case of breakdowns.

It was also decided that heavy vehicles would be parked only in the outer areas during the conference period.
