THANJAVUR: A multi-coloured, beautiful, giant balloon was launched by the World Classical Tamil Conference reception committee at Annai Sathya Stadium here on Wednesday to create an awareness of the conference to be held in Coimbatore from June 23 to 27.

Hundreds of school students witnessed the balloon along with Collector M. S. Shanmugham. The balloon had invitations on two sides for the conference. The invitation with the title “Kalaignar Azhaikirar” with the image of the Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi invited the people to participate in the conference.

A slight drizzle and poor wind position delayed the launch. Students cheered when the balloon was inflated with cold air and then with hot air to keep it float in the air. It is a long process to inflate the balloon.

According to Benedick, co-ordinator of the programme, the balloon, which is 100 ft high and has a volume of 105000 cubic ft was made of Normax fabric at USA. Cold air is blown into the balloon and later hot air will be filled in to replace cold air. The balloon which becomes light will lift in the air.

Meanwhile, Tamil University is organising a rally to create an awareness of the conference here on Thursday. The rally in which nearly 500 students, teachers and staff of the university participate will start from the railway station and end at the university campus via Gandhiji road. The rally will be flagged off by the Collector at 3 p.m. at the railway station, said a press release issued here on Wednesday.
